Efficiently Remove Burrs from Sheared, Plasma and Laser Cut Edges
The Turbo-Burr® from Heck Industries, Inc. (Howell, MI) weighs only three lbs. and uses a standard carbide burr to remove burrs on very thin materials up to large blocks. Cutter depth is adjustable from light burr removal up to 1/16” chamfers at speeds to 10’ per minute. This tool can be used to deburr, chamfer or bevel any straight edged part of virtually any material which can be worked with carbide tooling. The TURBO-BURR is unique in that it can be used both as a bench and a hand tool. Put a safety edge on sheet metal in one pass. Pneumatically operated, uses 5–11 cfm of air volume. Available in two models, Model S with a closed V block, suitable for most applications and our Model R, with a small gap at the bottom of the V, suitable for materials 0.135” and heavier where large burrs are present.
Cobot Perfects Finishing of Extra Large Parts in Manufacturing Processes
Kane Robotics Inc. (Austin, TX) has engineered, fabricated and implemented the GRIT XL collaborative robot (cobot) that grinds, sands and finishes large metal and composite parts for general industrial, aerospace, oil and gas and other types of manufacturers. The mobile, versatile robot works in conjunction with humans to speed up and perfect material removal. With a robotic arm that reaches up to 15”, the GRIT XL polishes or buffs airplane engine lip skins to mirror-finish shine, sands large metal surfaces to prep them for painting and grinds welds on oversized aluminum or steel tanks, all at more than three times the speed of humans. The preprogrammed, user-friendly cobot has a touchscreen and intuitive interface, providing a fast learning curve for operators. GRIT enhances a human’s job by performing the repetitive, debilitating work of material removal, freeing up workers to focus on higher-level decision-making tasks. The cobot also minimizes repetitive motion injuries, saving companies from mounting health care costs and reducing the need to continually rehire for laborious, hard-to-fill jobs. GRIT’s low price point relative to industrial automation, plus its easy implementation and integration into existing manufacturing processes, make for a quick ROI, even for small- and medium-sized manufacturers. “GRIT is a low-cost, low risk point of entry for any manufacturer looking to automate some of the most tedious processes in their operations,” said Kane Robotics CEO John Spruce. “With the GRIT XL, manufacturers will see improvement in productivity and quality but also in team health and morale.”
Self-sharpening Abrasives Cut Faster, Last Longer
Saint-Gobain Abrasives (Worcester, MA), one of the world’s largest abrasives manufacturers, offers Norton BlueFire Abrasives, which includes belts, cloth quick-change, flap discs, and mini flap discs. Featuring, proprietary self-sharpening zirconia alumina grain shape and chemistry, and a resin bond for faster cut rates and durability, the BlueFire R860 and R887D abrasive products provide exceptional performance on a wide range of materials in light to heavy-pressure applications.
A heavy-duty polyester backing is designed for long life and will withstand challenging applications. In addition to metal fabrication and welding, Norton BlueFire abrasive products are well-suited for key industries such as foundry, aerospace, automotive, oil/gas, wind turbines and general metalworking. Users have experienced a more than 50% performance improvement and a faster cut rate compared with other zirconia alumina products.
The BlueFire R860 flap discs are over graded, acting coarser for exceptionally faster, smooth metal removal. Easily trimmable, flexible plastic back discs are conformable and require less pressure at peak performance. R860 flap discs are especially well-suited for stock removal, weld blending, deburring/deflashing, blending/finishing and edge chamfering applications.
Norton BlueFire R860 cloth quick-change discs have a base adhesion, which reduces grain shedding and minimizes loading on soft metals such as aluminum, brass and bronze, as well as stainless and carbon steels. Moderate grinding, beveling, blending and finishing are key applications for these discs.
BlueFire mini flap discs are a perfect complement to the Norton Mini Grinder, which answers the demand for smaller, ergonomically friendly tools. BlueFire mini flap discs feature durable, Y-weight polyester flaps that improve life, grain retention and fray resistance. The mini flap discs wear away evenly and produce an aggressive cutting action while providing blending capabilities. Key applications include stock removal, deburring/deflashing, blending/finishing, edge chamfering and weld blending.
Norton’s BlueFire R887D belts feature a supersized grinding aid for cooler cuts and minimized loading, resulting in longer life on stainless steel and other harder-to-grind materials. Base adhesion reduces grain shedding, and is ideal for stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, tool steel and brass/bronze materials.
The BlueFire R887D cloth quick-change discs have the same features and benefits of the R860 cloth quick-change discs, plus offer a supersized grinding aid for cooler cuts and minimized loading, which results in longer life on stainless steel and other harder-to-grind materials. In addition to metal fabrication and welding, R887D cloth quick-change discs are ideal for heavy grinding in challenging applications found in industries such as aerospace, wind turbines and oil/gas.
