New Podcast “How 3D Printing Moves Us Towards Sustainability” Is Available from Trade Association
The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) has made available a new, free podcast titled “How 3D Printing Moves Us Towards Sustainability.”

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is unlike many conventional manufacturing methods. In those methods, a part is produced by removing and disposing of material from a substrate. In 3D printing, however, a part is produced by building it layer-by-layer, reducing waste.
While this technique works well for plastic resins, additive manufacturing can present challenges when it’s used for metal alloys. In this podcast episode, further insight into additive manufacturing is offered by two experts who are conducting research on 3D printing of metal alloys: Anthony Rollett, Ph.D. (Carnegie Mellon University) and Wojtek Misiolek, Ph.D. (Lehigh University).
The new episode is third in STLE’s podcast series “Perfecting Motion: Tribology and the Quest for Sustainability.” The series is hosted by Neil Canter, Ph.D., who is STLE advisor, technical programs and services and is a Tribology and Lubrication Technology (TLT) writer. The series covers a range of tribology and lubrication topics, including additive manufacturing, lubricant additives, nano-lubricants, nano-additives, lubricant testing, graphene, and more.
“Additive manufacturing is improving the efficiency and sustainability of industrial production across many industries, including metalworking, manufacturing, transportation, and power energy,” Canter said. “But the benefits don’t stop there. This technique is also making a positive impact in non-industrial sectors like healthcare, enabling manufacturers to tailor-make prosthetic devices, implants, tissues, and more.”
STLE (Park Ridge, IL) serves over 13,000 individuals and 250 companies and organizations that comprise the business sector of tribology and lubrication engineering.
