OPEN MIND Technologies and HAIMER Collaborate to Machine a Panther Model
OPEN MIND Technologies AG (Wessling, Germany) and HAIMER GmbH (Igenhausen, Germany) teamed up to create a 20″-long panther out of aluminum through 5-axis machining.

It took the HAIMER and OPEN MIND team approximately three weeks to complete the first free-standing panther. Once the machining parameters were in place and optimized, the panther—approximate length 20″ (500 mm)—was machined in just under 13 hours.
The panther model will be showcased by the Augsburger Panther hockey team and will be displayed by HAIMER and OPEN MIND in their booths at future trade shows.
“A model such as this one was a great opportunity to put the versatility and flexibility of our software to the test,” said Christian Neuner, OPEN MIND’s manager of global engineering services. “hyperMILL® has a wide range of functions that allow CAM users to truly optimize a machine’s capabilities to achieve the desired goal, including making intricate, challenging parts.”
During machining, for the roughing process, a four-flute cutter with a corner radius from the Duo-Lock™ HAIMER MILL Alu series was used. For the finishing process, the full radius version of the solid-carbide endmill from the HAIMER MILL Alu series was used. OPEN MIND said that that endmill was chosen because of its micro-geometrical properties, which were designed for smoothness and top surface quality.
The panther was machined on a linear 5-axis DMG MORI HSC70 machining center.
HAIMER makes tool presetting machines, solid-carbide cutting tools, and toolholders.
