HEIDENHAIN Introduces New Dual Encoder for Robots
HEIDENHAIN Corp. (Schaumburg, IL) has introduced the KCI 120 Dplus, a rotary encoder that provides motor feedback and position measurement in high-accuracy robots.

The compact encoder consists of one scanning head and two different types of rotor units, all connectable to a controller/drive via one cable. The encoder is 20 mm in height and is low in weight, making it useful in tight installation spaces and attractive for a variety of high-accuracy motion control applications.
The two-in-one encoder can handle vibration loads of up to 400 m/s² on the stator and 600 m/s² on the rotor. According to HEIDENHAIN, the KCI 120 Dplus is particularly resistant to contamination and magnetic fields because of its robust inductive scanning method.
The encoder is available with Functional Safety capability and, with measures in the control, can achieve SIL 3 safety rating. According to HEIDENHAIN, a manufacturer can therefore minimize malfunctions and facilitate the safe operation of its associated machines and automated systems.
