Star Cutter Co. (Farmington Hills, MI) updates the NXT tool grinder’s mechanical, software and automation features and functions. Designed in a modular fashion that offers quick adaptation to application requirements, the versatile 5-axis CNC machine has a small footprint (6.5 feet wide and 7.5 feet long) and large grind zone (30.2 inches long, 19.9 inches wide, 25.6 inches high).

Mechanical improvements enhance rigidity and improve contamination containment and offer washdown bed and coolant boost pump upgrade options.

The machine’s Flexium Tools controller runs NUMROTO 4.2.0., the latest version of NUM Corp.’s grinding software. There’s also a solution for freeform grinding using ESPRIT CAD/CAM 3D simulation and special capability for medical components.

Enhanced automation package accommodates denser pallet arrays for improved lot sizes and runtime and provides smoother robot operation and better repeatability. The system can adapt to multiple part profiles to be produced within a single run. Laser marking system is standard for automated tool marking, in addition to many other new features.

Standard and custom options for process enhancement include clearance-optimized flip-up and air-actuated tailstock and new workholding solutions. Real-time tracking of temperatures, spindle hours and bearing travel distances improve preventative maintenance functionality.

Options include 28kW synchronous spindle capable of 20,000 RPM and Fanuc robot automation with 0.196-to-1.25-inch (5-to-32-mm) gripper assembly.

The machine runs tools up to 10 inches (250 mm) in diameter.
