Single-Acting 5-Axis Vise for 6-Sided Machining

An active jaw pull-down function enables Schunk’s Kontec KSX-C2 vise for 5-axis machining centers to securely hold the smallest of parts for machining of a sixth side. Quick-change system enables exchange of a large number of system jaws within seconds without tools.

Thanks to a tool-free jaw quick-change system, reversible jaws for enlarging the clamping area, and 5.12-inch (130-mm) basic jaw stroke, the Kontec KSX-C2 stationary clamping system from Schunk (Morrisville, NC) increases the efficiency of 5-axis machining centers by enabling operators to quickly move from job to job.

With an upwardly tapered outside contour, the 5-axis vise improves accessibility with standard tools. A broad range of quick-change jaws is available to facilitate changeovers. Clamping range can be enhanced with a standard piston rod extension.

Active jaw pull-down function locks the second jaw to enable 6-sided machining. The vise is operated via an encapsulated spindle. Turning the spindle advances the moving jaw to the workpiece, which is clamped via torque. The fixed jaw can be released and the vise’s clamping center adjusted by loosening the fastening screw. By fixing the movable jaw, an active pull-down effect can be generated during the clamping process. This allows very precise machining of the sixth side.

A torque wrench is used to adjust clamping forces. A maximum of 40 kN at a torque of 120 Nm can be achieved for safe and effective holding even with small surfaces. The forces for clamping sensitive parts can be finely adjusted. The long guiding system and the arrangement of the clamping mechanism ensure a rigid, dimensionally stable setup. Elastomer damping absorbs occurring oscillations during machining.

The drive and adjustment mechanisms are fully encapsulated to protect against chips, dirt, and coolant.

Offered in four base body lengths (13 inches/330 mm, 17 inches/430 mm, 19.7 inches/500 mm, 24.8 inches/630 mm, and 31.5 inches/800 mm) and two heights (6.89 inches/175 mm and 8.43 inches/214 mm), the vise is easily combined with the company’s Vero-S quick-change pallet system or exchanged at a maximum repeat accuracy on the machine table. The necessary clamping pins can be directly integrated in the vise body without adapter plates. Because clamping is done by tension, no bending load occurs on the base body if a quick-change pallet system is used.
