The WI-2200 weld inspection system from Xiris Automation Inc. (Ontario, Canada) detects 0.015-mm mismatches, undercuts, sunken welds, bead height, deflection, freeze line, and scarfing defects on tube and pipe with outside diameters from 0.2 to 8 inches (5 to 200 mm) and maximum bead width of 0.4-inch (10 mm) in real time. The camera can be added to most tube mills that employ open arc welding, such as laser, TIG, or plasma power sources, as well as on clean HF and ERW mills.

The vision system incorporates a Class 2 laser that, with an output of less than 1 milliwatt (mW), won’t burn skin or harm the human eye. This makes installing and using the system safer and easier and eliminates the need for a safety officer.

Users can adjust the camera exposure to control the brightness of the laser line in the acquired image, which provides more linear control over the laser line for better inspection.
