Lucifer Builds Custom Dual-Chamber Furnace

A Midwest company has put a new Red Devil unit into service to heat treat steel parts in-house. Cost effective and customized with safety features, the RD8-KHE18 furnace offers space-saving working dimensions of 12 x 14 x 18 inches in both chambers.

Lucifer Furnaces (Warrington, PA), a manufacturer of industrial heat treating furnaces and ovens, has shipped a dual chamber Red Devil furnace to a customer in the Midwest who selected the unit as a cost-effective means to heat treat their small-tool steel parts in-house in a timely manner.

Model RD8-KHE18 is a space-saving, dual chamber furnace with working dimensions of 12 inches high by 14 inches wide by 18 inches long in both upper and lower chambers. The upper hardening chamber is rated up to 2200 degrees F, while the lower convection oven tempers up to 1200 degrees F.

The unit was customized with a programmable controller featuring an overtemp safety system for the upper chamber as well as a seven-day timer with alarm for audible event notification.

Both chambers are lined with a multilayered 4.5-inch combination of lightweight firebrick hotface insulation and mineral wool backup insulation for energy efficient operation. The firebrick is precision dry fit inside the chamber with staggered seams for reduced heat loss while allowing for thermal expansion. Heating elements are coiled with heavy gauge wire of low watt density mounted in easy-to-replace side wall panels.

The lower chamber has a rear-mounted fan for uniform circulation of heat. Ceramic hearth plates in both chambers support the workload, protect floor brick, and can be replaced without removing heating elements.
