Developed for manufacturers of such heavy and large-diameter components as construction equipment gearboxes and oil field machinery, which require turning operations, the DHF 8000ST from Doosan Machine Tools America (Pine Brook, NJ) is a single-table version of the DHF 8000 5-axis horizontal machining center (HMC). The ST model incorporates a turning function and, to shrink its footprint, doesn’t have a pallet changer.

The HMC machines parts weighing up to 2 tons with the same precision as much smaller parts. The nodding-head spindle and direct-drive B-axis rotary table handle machining and turning processes from roughing to finishing in one setup. In addition, the configuration makes quick work of multiface workpieces and 5-axis simultaneous machining of complex shapes.

Like the DHF 8000, the spindle has a stroke of +60 to -100 degrees (up/down) with clamping torque of over 3,600 ft-lb. The ST comes with a 47 horsepower HSK100-T spindle taper with a 6,000 r/min gear head spindle. Optional 15,000 r/min high-speed spindles are available.

A 1,000mm-(39.4-inch)-diameter pallet offers a larger work envelope than the older model. Its large working area holds parts up to ø 1,600mm (62.9 inches) in diameter by 1,400mm (55.1 inches) high.

Cross-roller linear guideways enhance rigidity. The Y and Z axes are fitted with dual ball screws to ensure greater structural stability and accuracy, while the column is designed with high static and dynamic rigidity to provide optimum machining performance. Linear scales on each axis maintain superior positioning accuracy.

Thermal-compensation system monitors and automatically minimizes thermal growth. Cooling systems for the spindle and ball screws further enhance thermal stability.
