Handheld Sensor Reliably Measures Countersinks on Various Surfaces

LMI Corp.’s LaserGage HS742 3D sensor is a 3D laser profiler and  that uses blue-laser technology and application-specific algorithms to overcome the challenge of measuring countersinks on solid, translucent, shiny, and opaque surfaces with repeatable results.

Measuring countersinks on flat or curved surfaces made of different materials with repeatable results has always been a challenge. The LaserGage HS742 DSP sensor with blue laser technology from Linear Measurement Instruments (LMI) Corp. (Fenton, MI) resolves this challenge. A 3D laser profiler housed in a totally self-contained and portable package, the sensor uses a laser stripe grid pattern to map flat-head fastener flushness, countersink alignment and dielectric fill height with one trigger pull. Surface maps are displayed in real-time on the color LCD, and measurements are extracted and simultaneously written to the data table.

A scanning region of 1.2 inch x 1.2 inch enables the sensor to measure countersinks and fasteners from 0.25-inch to 0.625-inch in diameter with +/-0.001-inch repeatability. Because the sensor maps the surface and uses blue laser technology, measurements can be taken on curved surfaces as well as on solid metal, composite, shiny, dull and translucent materials.

Countersink measurements include countersink average diameter, virtual fastener min/max height, countersink min/max radius, normality and bearing.

The fill function calculates max and min height in a user-specified region in the scan.

Modes of operation include go/no go, gauge, and routine.

A rechargeable, lithium-ion battery provides power for three to four hours of operation. Power-saving functions can be used to extend operating times even longer. Files are constantly saved, so data is never lost. The on-screen fuel gauge and a low-battery message tells the operator when it’s time for a fresh battery.
