Optimized Multimaterial Drill

Sandvik Coromant’s CoroDrill 860 – with GM geometry – drills a greater range of materials and applications and lasts much longer than its predecessor, the R840. Suitable for the automotive, general machinery, and oil-and-gas industries, where hole quality is critical.

The advanced geometry of Sandvik Coromant’s CoroDrill 860-GM makes it ideal for use with steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened metals. It also performs competitively with nonferrous metals such as copper and aluminum and heat-resistant super alloys.

The R840 is the best-selling Sandvik Coromant (Fair Lawn, NJ) drill in the company’s solid round tools offering. However, advances in technology and customers’ need to improve productivity meant it was time for an upgrade. The result is a -GM geometry for the CoroDrill 860, a new grade and innovative flute design with a multilayer physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating on the drill tip. The results are improved drilling capabilities across a range of materials and applications — including general engineering and automotive — and much longer tool life than the R840.

A double margin that adds stability, increased core strength, and reinforced corners contributes to process security and finished hole quality. The highly polished flute improves chip evacuation and reduces heat buildup during drilling of materials including aluminum, copper, cast iron, steel, stainless steel, hardened metals, and heat-resistant super alloys.

“We wanted to offer an improved solution for a vast range of industrial applications and to streamline our product offering,” says Global Product Manager James Thorpe. “We’ve achieved this with one multipurpose drill that gives superior performance across a range of materials. As well as improved drilling quality, customers can also reduce their tooling inventory and overall production costs, with greater machine flexibility and reduced setup times.”
