The upgraded HMD904 portable magnetic drill from Hougen Manufacturing Inc. (Swartz Creek, MI) includes major improvements and features.

A proprietary Hougen motor housed in an aluminum casing improves durability. The cord is incorporated into the housing to increase safety and reduce maintenance to a minimum.

Overall height has been lowered by 1-1/2 inches, enabling the drill to fit into tighter areas.

A pilot light built into the magnet allows the operator to quickly line up the pilot with the hole’s center location in low light.

A two-stage magnet increases holding power by 30% when the motor is on, saving energy and increasing magnet life.

The arbor system uses a 5/8-inch slot drive for more rigidity, hole accuracy, positive slug ejection, and quicker use of accessories such as drill chucks and tapping attachments.

An ergonomic carrying handle, a spot to hold the hex wrench, reversible feed handles, and a d-ring on the back of the magnet for quickly attaching the safety chain make the drill easier to use.

Other safety features include a no-adjustment switch that stops the motor if lift of the magnetic base is detected; an LED indicator that monitors this sensor alerts the operator if the switch isn’t properly engaged. A two-stage power-on switch prevents drill rotation unless the magnet has been engaged and, in the case of a power interruption, safety circuitry keeps the motor off after power is restored until the start button is manually depressed.

The drill weighs 30 pounds (13.6 kg); is 18 inches high, 7-3/4 inches wide, and 11-5/8 inches long (457mm x 197mm x 295mm); and provides drilling diameters from 7/16-inch to 1-1/2 inches (12 – 38mm) and 2-inch (50mm) depth of cut. The drill has an electrical rating of 9A and a 450 RPM motor.
