Single-flute solid-carbide gundrills from Star SU LLC (Hoffman Estates, IL) are engineered and manufactured to meet part print requirements for medical devices and instruments made from the complete range of titanium and stainless steel materials.
The small-diameter gundrills provide excellent cost savings. “This was driven from tool life and throughput improvements,” says Round Tool Sales Manager Jamie Dunneback. “Several case studies resulted in doubling production capability.”
- Titanium (6Al-4V) case study – tool life improvement from 700 parts to 1,700 parts (143% increase).
- 440 Stainless case study – tool life improvement from 110 parts to 220 parts (100% increase).
Optimization of the gundrill’s manufacturing process was key to the improvements. “We looked at everything, from selecting the appropriate grade of carbide, surface finish, edge prep, and coating – all of which are essential for success in the medical sector,” says Dunneback.
- Selected grades of carbide
- Superior surface finish on the tool
- Special drill geometries
- Special edge preparation on the cutting edge
- Selected advanced tool coatings
- Coolant hole diameter size starts at 0.028-inch (0.700 mm)
- Designed, manufactured, and serviced in the USA.
