Portable Measurement Arm Meets High-Speed Scanner

Designed for Hexagon’s 7-axis Absolute Arm, the RS-Squared area scanner adds 3D laser scanning to touch probing to measure parts faster than conventional scanners. No reference markers are required, and that’s the silver bullet that keeps overall scan time to a minimum.

By combining the flexibility of a portable arm with the speed of structured light scanning technology, the RS-Squared area scanner for Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence’s (North Kingstown, RI) Absolute Arm measures parts faster than conventional laser scanners and other structured light scanners.

The RS-Squared takes four square “tiles” of 3D point data per second while providing touch-probe accuracy in hard-to-reach areas. Because it doesn’t require reference markers or employ fringe projection like other similar scanners, overall scanning time is reduced.

“We want users to scan their parts in the least amount of time, which means addressing preparation as well as scanning,” says Absolute Arm Product Manager Anthony Vianna. “RS-Squared is the first area scanner to not use reference markers in the traditional way – because the Absolute Arm does the referencing for it – enabling users to measure with minimum downtime.”

The scanner complements other scanners, sensors, and probes already available for the Absolute Arm, representing an ultrahigh-speed alternative most suited to large parts with lower detail requirements. Like the RS6 and RS5 laser scanners, the RS-Squared can be easily removed from the arm at any time and swapped for another sensor or probe without any need for calibration.

Hexagon also offers two additional control packs for the Absolute Arm, both with complete functionality over a single cable to reduce shop floor clutter. The high-end Wireless Pack model delivers full-speed scanning performance over WiFi along with dual hot-swappable batteries for all-day power.

The RS-Squared can be purchased as a complete system with a new Absolute Arm 7-Axis or as a retrofit. All new orders of a complete Absolute Arm system will ship with a control pack model.
