L.S. Starrett Expands Hardness Testing Line with 16 Products

L.S. Starrett’s 16 hardness-testing solutions include seven Rockwell systems, eight Vickers systems, and one Brinell system. Suitable for internal and external testing via dolphin nose design, the No. 3823 and No. 3824 test carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nonferrous metals per 30 Rockwell hardness scales.

The No. 3824 with automated Z-axis is part of L.S. Starrett’s expanded line of 16 hardness-testing solutions comprising seven Rockwell systems, eight Vickers systems, and one Brinell system. Suitable for internal and external testing via a dolphin nose design, the No. 3823 and Starrett 3824 are capable of testing in 30 Rockwell hardness scales for carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nonferrous metals.

The No. 3823 and No. 3824 Rockwell hardness testers with fully automated load/unload procedures are two of 16 additional hardness-testing solutions from The L.S. Starrett Co. (Athol, MA) that include seven Rockwell systems, eight Vickers systems and one Brinell system.

“From basic analog and manual control to advanced digital and fully automated systems, our new lineup offers a comprehensive range of solutions for any or all needs,” says Vice President Industrial Products ‒ North America Emerson Leme.

Both models use an electronic measurement-and-control unit instead of traditional dead weights, enabling high-accuracy measurements at all test loads up to 0.5%. Suitable for internal and external testing via a dolphin nose design, they meet ISO 6508-2 and ASTM E18 standards and are capable of measuring 30 Rockwell hardness scales for carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.

They feature programmable scale conversions, dwell times, statistical capabilities, test counter, built-in microprinter, touch screen control on a high-definition LCD display, USB output, and are furnished with PC-based software. They automatically store a maximum of 400 items of test results. Testing capacity is 12 in (300 mm) vertical and 8.8 in (220 mm) horizontal.

Thanks to its automated Z-axis, the user simply presses the No. 3824’s Start key to launch and complete testing. With its manual Z-axis, the No. 3823 is a good value alternative to the No. 3824. Both models feature auto load test force control.

In addition to the fully automated twin Rockwell/superficial Rockwell testers, the  Rockwell line includes two regular digital testers, one superficial dial tester, one superficial digital tester, and two twin Rockwell/superficial Rockwell testers (one dial and one digital).

The Vickers hardness testers include six microunits for handling a testing range of 1HV to 2967HC and eight test forces: two with open-source digiCamControl Basic software for manually selecting indentation edges, two with digiCamControl Auto software for automatically detecting indentation edges, and two with turret control (one with basic software, one with auto software). Two macrounits, one with digiCamControl Basic and one with digiCamControl Auto, handle 17 test forces.

The digital Brinell hardness tester features automatic loading and handles 10 scales.
