Drills for Higher Reliability in Aerospace, Automotive, Oil & Gas Applications
Sandvik Coromant’s solid carbide drills – the CoroDrill 860 with -SM geometry, the CoroDrill 860 with -GM geometry, and the CoroDrill 863 with -O geometry – improve consistency and performance on workpieces made from challenging materials such as heat-resistant super alloys (HRSAs), titanium alloys, and composites.

CoroDrills from Sandvik Coromant (Fair Lawn, NJ) are designed to improve consistency and performance during hole-making operations on workpieces made from challenging aerospace materials such as heat-resistant super alloys (HRSAs) and titanium alloys, which are extremely hard, and composites, which tend to delaminate.
CoroDrill 860 with -SM geometry. Developed to safeguard quality when making holes in ISO S-class materials like HRSAs, including Inconel, Waspalloy, Hastelloy and Udimet. A new grade, 1210, features a new coating to reduce flank wear.
The resulting consistent and reliable cutting edge delivers dimensional accuracy and better finished hole tolerance. Ideal for unmanned production, users can expect to see a significant reduction in component scrap rates. Overall, cost per hole will be reduced.
Key aerospace applications include bosses and scallop/flange face features on casings as well other features on low-pressure and high-pressure turbine disks and blisks. The assortment, which has internal coolant capability throughout, extends from 2xD to 5xD in diameters from 3 to 16 mm (0.118 in to 0.630 in).
CoroDrill 863 with -O geometry. Designed for drilling composites, the substrate is based on a new grade, O1AD, for improved wear resistance. High axial rake angle reduces delamination in unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Key aerospace applications include aircraft frames, wingboxes, fuselage sections, stabilizers, floor beams, and flaps. The assortment is available from 4xD to 5xD in diameters from 3 to 10 mm (0.118 in to 0.393 in).
Advanced Geometry for More Materials: CoroDrill 860 -GM
Sandvik Coromant has launched the latest edition to its CoroDrill 860 range. The CoroDrill 860 has an advanced -GM geometry that offers high-performance drilling across a wide range of materials and applications, as well as significantly improved tool life.
The new launch stems from one of the most popular product ranges from Sandvik Coromant, the R840. Currently, the R840 is the largest selling drill in the business’s solid round tools offering. However, new advances in drilling technology and customers’ needs necessitated the upgrade.
The CoroDrill 860 with -GM geometry features a new grade, innovative flute design with a multi-layer physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating on the drill tip. The result is improved drilling capability across a range of materials and applications – including general engineering and automotive – and a longer tool life than its predecessor, the R840.
One of the most innovative qualities of the drill is its advanced geometry, with the double margin adding stability, increased core strength and reinforced corners, all of which contribute to process security and finished hole quality. The flute is highly polished, which helps improve chip evacuation and reduces heat build-up during the drilling process.
The advanced geometry of the CoroDrill 860-GM makes it ideal for use with a variety of materials – including steel, stainless steel, cast iron and hardened metals. It also performs competitively with non-ferrous metals, such as copper and aluminum, and heat resistant super alloys.
“Sandvik Coromant provides machining solutions for a multitude of industrial sectors,” says James Thorpe, global product manager at Sandvik Coromant. “We are always improving our offering and understand that enhanced tool life and improved productivity are two of our customers’ major requirements. The CoroDrill 860 with -GM geometry is suitable for applications where hole quality is critical within the automotive, general machinery and oil and gas industries.
“We wanted to offer an improved solution for a vast range of industrial applications, and also to streamline our product offering,” adds Thorpe. “We’ve achieved this with a single, multi-purpose drill that gives superior performance across a range of materials. As well as improved drilling quality for our customers, they can also reduce their tooling inventory and overall production costs, with greater machine flexibility and reduced set-up times.
