Two Measurement Solutions from Mitutoyo

The multisensor MiSCAN Vision System is a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with a microscopic-level scanning probe. The compact MiSTAR 555 is a space-saving in-line or near-line CNC CMM designed for high-speed, high-accuracy measurements with assurance from 10° C to 40° C.

Mitutoyo America Corp.’s MiSCAN Vision System is a hybrid metrology solution for microscopic forms that combines a CMM with the MPP-NANO, a scanning probe that uses styli with diameters down to 125 microns (μm). Setup is easy with the observation camera.
Mitutoyo America Corp.’s. MiSTAR 555 shop floor CNC CMM operates without compressed air and on conventional 120V, 20 amp electrical service with movement speeds of 606 mm/s and acceleration of 2,695 mm/s² (3D).

Two coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) from Mitutoyo America Corp. (Aurora, IL) offer capabilities for two very different markets.

The hybrid MiSCAN Vision System enables manufacturers to meet demanding autonomous vehicle and control system component specifications by combining a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with the MPP-NANO, a scanning probe that uses styli with diameters down to 125 microns (μm) to measure microscopic forms. Key features:

  • Allows highly accurate autonomous scanning covering micro-form to larger workpieces. Using the observation camera, setup of measurement can be easily achieved. The SP25M scanning probe is also supported to allow small- and large-sized workpieces and features to be measured.
  • System uses the same image head as Mitutoyo’s Quick Vision measuring system and Mitutoyo’s Quick Vision Apex lighting system, providing multiple lighting functions and evaluation software.
  • Enables high-accuracy, highly efficient measurement of miniature optical tubes used in micro camera arrays and the contour of high-degree aspheric lenses used in vehicle-mounted cameras.
  • Highly efficient scanning of microscopic gear teeth used to be difficult, but this system provides this functionality by entering each nominal using Gearpak, Mitutoyo’s gear teeth evaluation software, to evaluate tooth profile error and tooth trace error.
  • Scanning measurement of microscopic feature detail, such as precision punches and dies, using extra-small-diameter styli, which are available with diameters as small as 125 μm.
  • Conventionally, only destructive measurement was possible for the inner diameter of nozzles and draw dies. MiSCAN enables scanning measurement using the stylus on holes with a maximum aspect ratio of 17:1.

With the modular control unit and PC stored in the base of the main body structure, the space-saving in-line or near-line MiSTAR 555 CNC shop floor CMM is approximately 70% smaller than  conventional moving-bridge CMMs. Designed for accuracy assurance from 10° C to 40° C, the machine’s open-structure design with a single support moving bridge enables users to mount workpieces from the front, rear, and right for installation.

The MiSTAR 555 operates without compressed air and on conventional 120V, 20 amp electrical service with movement speeds of 606 mm/s and acceleration of 2,695 mm/s² (3D). Scale-detection system with high resistance to airborne contaminants eliminates the need for costly environmental-control enclosures.

Industry 4.0 features include a Status Monitor that retrieves status features using MTConnect protocol and a Condition Monitor that collects and evaluates operational information such as measuring, movement lengths, machine error, and probe functions for preventative maintenance and machine use statistics.
