Two light-cutting, periphery-ground geometries for radius inserts for Sandvik Coromant’s (Schaumburg, IL) CoroMill 331 expand the milling cutter’s list of suitable applications to the automotive and aerospace sectors:
- -M30 geometry optimizes groove milling of steel and cast iron automotive parts. Available for size 11 inserts with radius dimensions from 0.059 in to 0.118 in (1.5 mm to 3 mm), it’s characterized by its light-cutting action. This tough geometry boosts security in weak setups or long overhang applications, providing reliability and increased competitiveness. Grade availability includes GC1130, GC1020, GC3040, and GC4330 steel milling grade.
- -L50 geometry is intended for aerospace and oil-and-gas component machining. Offered for size 11 inserts with radius dimensions from 0.118 in to 0.248 in (3 mm to 6.3 mm), the geometry’s light-cutting action is suitable for stainless steel, nickel-based super alloys, and titanium. Grade options are GC1040, GC2040, and S30T.
In addition, size 8, 11, and 14 inserts with a 0.157-in (4-mm) radius are being made available in -WM geometry. Intended to improve automotive parts milling, grade options include GC1130, GC1020, GC3040, and GC4330.
