DirectDex drill heads, inserts, and guide pads from Sunnen Products Co. (St. Louis, MO) directly correspond to the previously available line of Sandvik Coromant CoroDrill 800 deep-hole drill heads, inserts, and guide pads. The new line’s BTA/STS (single-tube system) and DTS/Ejector (double-tube system) styles are designed to produce a low cost per bore with consistent performance.
Inserts are available in two grades:
- CVD-coated to optimize machining heat-resistant super alloys and ISO P, K, H, and N materials
- PVD-coated for ISO P, K, H, and N materials and to resist built-up edges.
“We’re excited to fill the void in the market for Sandvik-style tooling,” says President and COO Chris Miltenberger. “This is congruent with our strategy to be the one-source solution for systems and tooling related to bore machining, whether the process used is deep-hole drilling, skiving/roller burnishing, lapping, or honing.”
Sunnen’s technical competencies include automated and manual systems, custom system development and integration, abrasives, tooling, cutting fluids, and bore gaging. Through acquisition and product development, the company also provides tooling for hole creation and complementary bore-sizing and -finishing processes such as trepanning, counterboring, and form boring.
