ALLIED MACHINE EXPANDS BORING TOOL LINE

Products reduce vibration in large-diameter applications and increase efficiency by simplifying insert changeout.

Posted: December 27, 2019

Allied Machine & Engineering’s newest products include viscoelastically mounted Novitech damper modules and the 4TEX IC drill, which enables the same insert to be used in either drill pocket.

Allied Machine & Engineering (Greenville, SC) adds two hole-roughing and -finishing solutions that provide flexibility and modular integration.

The Wohlhaupter brand now includes viscoelastically mounted Novitech damper modules to reduce vibration during machining of diameters ranging from 1.97 in to 8.07 in (50 mm – 205 mm) up to 10xD. They increase productivity, surface quality, and process reliability while extending insert and spindle life. A multibore connection (MVS) makes them easy to use with existing Wohlhaupter components.

The Novitech joins three other Wohlhaupter boring tools:

Vario-Bore improves productivity through its ease and accuracy of adjustment, virtually eliminating scrap. The head can be used alone or with a docking port for use with the universal digital module. With an easy-to-read and -use display that provides micron-accurate settings, the module features an accuracy of .0001 in (0.002 mm) on diameter.

Reported to be up to 50% lighter than steel alternatives, Alu-Line’s diameter range of 2.56 in to 128.15 in (65 mm to 3255mm) results in less stress on the machine and less runout in extended-length boring operations.

Combi-Line enables machinists to perform rough and finish operations with one  tool, reducing cycle time and inventory cost. One-pass boring is much quicker in comparison to helical milling or the dual-pass process of roughing followed by finishing.

The 4TEX is suitable for operations that include interrupted cuts, inclined work surfaces, and angled breakouts as well as high-temperature alloys and stainless steels. The indexable carbide (IC) drill is engineered to create optimal chip formation for efficient evacuation in holemaking processes and delivers higher penetration rates in light-duty machines than other standard drills. Ideal for applications that include shallow 2xD, 3xD, and 4xD holes in the 0.472-in-to-1.850-in (12-mm-to-47-mm) range.

Optimized for wear resistance, 4TEX’s insert geometries are offered in geometry/coating combinations for all ISO materials including steel, stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, nonferrous, and iron. The distinctive insert shape improves surface finish, hole quality, and penetration rates while keeping chips from winding around the tool. The same insert can be used in either drill pocket, simplifying insert changeout.

The drill’s design touts increased core strength, improving hole size and straightness. The flute space of the internal cutting-edge side, where chips often cluster, is 1.6 times larger than typical IC drills. Dual-twisted coolant outlets, coupled with the increased flute space, improve penetration rates by enhancing coolant flow and generating optimal chip extraction.
