The next-generation Kiwa KH-4500kai horizontal machining center from Methods Machine Tools, Inc. (Sudbury, MA) improves on the popular KH-4500 machine by using less floor space with a compact design that eliminates all possible wasted space while retaining large machining capacities that result in one of the largest work envelopes in its class. With standard chilled ballscrews for over 1G acceleration/deceleration on all axes and 3,149 ipm rapids, the KH-4500kai is the fastest in its machine class. Structural rigidity has been greatly enhanced with the “stepped” base and column casting design. Both the ATC magazine and the APC system are fully expandable in the field to allow adaptation to a shop’s growing business needs. This machine also provides multiple pallet 4+1 machining capabilities, in addition to a high chip-removal rate. Other standard features include four simultaneously controlled axes, provision for a coolant through spindle, a spindle oil cooler, ballscrew cooling and a Y-axis cooling system.

Machine construction of the KH-4500kai includes a box-type bed, a stepped layout of X-axis guide ways, roller type guide way, pallet and chip wash, an LNS-Turbo MH500 chip conveyor and spiral augers. Machine controls include tool life management, AI Contour Control 1 (AICC1) with 512 kB memory, helical interpolation and macro programming.
