Hybrid Systems Finish 3D Printed Parts in Single Setups

Hybrid multi-tasking technologies from Mazak combine both additive and conventional subtractive processes to eliminate work-in-process, reduce lead times, improve part accuracy, shorten setup times and streamline processes.

The Integrex i-400 AM multi-tasking machine from Mazak melts metal powder using fiber laser heat to generate near-net-shape component features, then completes them via high-precision finish machining. Cladding heads, or additive manufacturing nozzles, apply the molten material layer-by-layer to build the desired shape. The machine can also join different types of metals together for the efficient repair of existing worn or damaged components, such as aerospace turbine blades.

Hot wire AM (HWD) and laser metal deposition (LMD) technologies are used in hybrid multi-tasking technologies from Mazak Corporation (Florence, KY) that combine both additive and conventional subtractive processing capabilities to handle the most demanding, complex parts in single setups for complete part processing. HWD, also known as wire arc AM, uses an arc torch to melt metal wire directly onto workpieces, creating exceptionally precise sealing coatings as well as near-net-shape part features. LMD uses the heat from one or more lasers to create perfect coatings and build intricate micro-machined part features. These highly productive multi-tasking innovations create new levels of cost efficiency by eliminating work-in-process, dramatically reducing lead times, improving part accuracy, shortening setup times and streamlining processes.
