This past September, TRUMPF Inc. (Farmington, CT) held a contest to consign three TruPrint 1000 LMF systems to colleges, universities, and research institutes in North America. The application process for eligible recipients ran through December 15, 2018, before being considered by a jury of their company experts and an industry representative. The contest brought in 22 excellent applications from universities. These submissions gave insight into each applicant’s specific research objectives if they were to receive a TruPrint 1000 for their lab. Each proposal was carefully reviewed by a panel of experts: Dr. April Cooke, an applications engineer for the company; Dr. David Saint John, the director of advanced manufacturing for Linamar Corporation; and Dr. Marcus Lau, the industry manager of research for TRUMPF Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH (Ditzignen, Germany).

Drexel University (Philidelphia, PA), Youngstown State University (YSU; Youngstown, OH) and the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) were each chosen to receive a TruPrint 1000 for one year. Over this time period, the winners plan to carry out their intended research objectives: Drexel will utilize the system to further the development of biocompatible implants using new titanium and zirconia alloys to improve bone in-growth and biocompatibility. Youngstown will begin development of complex fractal shaped satellite antennas that are exceptionally volume efficient, and Michigan will focus on quality assurance for metallic additive manufacturing through in-situ optical diagnostics.
