Over the past several years, CNC Swiss-type lathes, predominant in medical and electronics applications, have become increasingly popular across a variety of other opportunities because of their ability to effectively produce complex, high accuracy finished parts in short cycle times. They are very effective for any application that machines long, slender parts from stock fed through a guide bushing. To meet the increasing demand for precision machining in a variety of different industries, Hardinge Inc. (Elmira, NY) expanded their Swiss-style collets and bushings production cell to include carbide-lined extended nose collets, overgrip collets for all manufacturers, bar loader collets, ER collets, Meehanite guide bushings and adaptive guide bushings. They have also continuously improved their manufacturing capabilities with advanced technologies, adding a lapping machine to improve surface finishes, a USACH grinder to improve accuracy and consistency, and additional equipment to increase capacity. By focusing on continuous improvement, they have achieved quicker delivery times by holding more inventory, improving manufacturing processes and converting key product lines to be considered stocked items.
