The Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC all-process, inverter-based welding system from ESAB Welding & Cutting Products (Denton, TX) can TIG weld with AC and DC outputs, MIG weld with solid wires (steel, stainless or aluminum), flux-cored weld with gas-shielded and self-shielded wires, and Stick weld with a DC output. The rated duty cycle is 205 amps at 20 percent. This system incorporates essential controls for AC TIG welding, such as an adjustable AC output frequency (up to 400 Hz) and adjustable AC wave balance control (up to 90 percent EN). AC output frequency controls the shape of the arc cone and arc force, while wave balance controls the amount of cleaning action vs. penetration. HF, or non-contact, arc starts are required for aluminum and are desirable (and sometimes required) in applications where end-users especially want to prevent accidental contamination from the tungsten electrode, such as welding chrome-moly tubing in motorsports and experimental aircraft applications, as well as welding stainless steel tubing in dairy and food processing facilities.
Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC features include 120V to 230V primary power flexibility, compact portability (the unit weighs 50 lb), a TFT LCD operator interface, dual gas solenoid valves and the same rugged housing as other Rebel units. It also incorporates the unique sMIG (“smart MIG”) function that enables users to begin MIG welding – with an extremely stable arc – just by setting metal thickness and wire diameter.
