For medical, automotive and general machining operations, the user-friendly MATRIS (Module Automation Transfer Robot Intelligence System) system from DMG MORI USA Inc. (Hoffman Estates, IL) requires no expertise in robot programming and operation. With modular peripherals that ensure quick installation, setup and even layout retrofit, MATRIS uses standard robot programs and a MAPPSconnected dedicated control system that connects robots, peripherals and machines so that users can enjoy simple and intuitive operation without special knowledge. This system can be paired with turning centers, machining centers and 5-axis machines. For example, it can perform machine tending on a CMX V vertical machining center that processes workpiece weights up to 2,205 lb and provides a travel path up to 43.3 in x 22 in x 20.2 in with rapid traverses of 1,417 in/m in XY and 1,181 in/m in Z. The CMX V can also be equipped with a speedMASTER 20,000 rpm high performance spindle that provides 50 hp and 163 ft-lb of torque for broad applications and continuous-operation durability that achieves high quality production results.

The modular peripherals of the MATRIS robot system include transfer equipment, workpiece stockers, external measuring equipment and more, all installed with a standard sized layout that can be changed and customized. MAPPSconnected integrates control over the entire automated system, including robots, modular peripherals and machine tools: operation monitoring, scheduling and production processes, etc. are centrally controlled in an accumulated database of measuring, transfer, operation and job history. Simple settings and maintenance means there is no need for robot teaching expertise. The touch-sensitive COMPACTline operation panel enables easy job creation and setting, with visualization for higher productivity. MATRIS includes rotary workpiece stockers with 10/14 pallets integrated with in-machine measurement that automatically rejects and discharges failed parts.

The IN/OUT conveyor system in MATRIS automatically transfers parts from preceding process to post process with a tray changer system that can stack and store up to eight trays. Completed parts are arranged automatically on each tray and ready to be shipped. An external high-accuracy workpiece measurement system accepts/rejects parts and feeds back results to the machines for stable machining accuracy. Flexible 3D measuring instruments can also be included, such as a 3D CMM for inspection of arbitrary points on various workpiece configurations. DMG MORI also offers the easily programmable Robo2Go 2nd Generation mobile robotic automation system for machine tending a variety of turning machines, such as a CTX beta 800. This mobile system is easy to program, with easy teach-in functions for different workpieces that can provide setup flexibility for multiple turning machines.
