Amada Miyachi America, Inc. (Monrovia, CA) appointed Stephen F. Shea as the Southern regional sales manager, providing sales and technical support for all products in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas. Prior to joining the company, Shea served as president of Shea Manufacturing Solutions (SMS), which was not only as an authorized representative for Amada Miyachi products, but also a provider of comprehensive contract engineering support in the areas of lean manufacturing implementation.

Shea has a Six Sigma Black Belt and significant lean manufacturing experience focusing on operations, quality, and continuous improvement. He has been responsible for high volume production floor operations for more than 20 years. “We are so pleased to welcome Steve, who has been one of our authorized sales representatives for four years and a customer for more than ten years,” said Kurt Tolliver, the vice president of sales at Amada Miyachi. “Steve has used our equipment on a variety of automotive sensor assembly lines, and will be able to help customers select the right equipment to optimize their processes.”

In other news, the company also expanded and enhanced their Detroit technical center, which now features 5,500 sq ft of laboratory space devoted to application development services for welding, marking, ablation, scribing and texturing of metals and plastics. Also on site is an expanded metallurgical lab for examining laser or resistance welds to analyze weld penetration and joint quality. Application experts are on hand to work with customers to develop next-generation joining or marking processes, especially for medical, aerospace, automotive, and electric vehicle battery production and joining of cells. The expanded lab facility offers expertise and access to equipment so that customers do not have to tie up their existing production facilities.

This new application technical center is headed by senior applications engineer Wes Buckley, who has 38 years of process experience in lasers and has worked at the existing laboratory for more than a decade. He is joined by three experienced technical experts, all who have worked closely with major automotive, medical and aerospace companies seeking to use Amada Miyachi America expertise to enhance their product development capabilities. Recent projects include systems with galvo delivery for joining automotive battery cells for the electric vehicle market.
