Centerless Grinding Using Angular Plunging

Mikrosa Kronos S 250 centerless grinding machines from United Grinding use angular plunging designed specifically for corundrom and CBN grinding jobs in high precision, mass production runs.

Posted: April 23, 2018

For plunge and through grinding of workpieces with diameters ranging from 0.059 in to 1.378 in with a plunge cut width up to 9.646 in, the Mikrosa Kronos S 250 centerless grinding machine from United Grinding uses angular plunging designed specifically for corundrom and CBN grinding in high precision, mass production.
The Mägerle MFP 50 CD grinding and machining center from United Grinding as a 5-axis or 6-axis system that easily handles challenging workpieces by grinding, milling and drilling in a single clamping to dramatically improve productivity. Spindle speeds of up to 10,000 rpm guarantee the highest machining precision. Generous machining clearance prevents collisions between the wheel flange and workpiece. Grinding wheels mounted at the front of the spindle and automatic positioning of the diamond rolls in the direction of the Z axis to change the profile provide the necessary clearance.

The Mikrosa Kronos S 250 centerless grinding machine from United Grinding North America, Inc. (Miamisburg, OH) uses angular plunging designed specifically for corundrom and CBN grinding in high precision, mass production. The Kronos S 250 features a grinding spindle mounted on maintenance-free hybrid roller bearings for higher peripheral speeds of up to 150 m/s and, in combination with the machine’s CBN high-speed technology, cycle times and set-up times can be significantly reduced. This machine is designed for plunge and through grinding of workpieces with diameters ranging from 0.059 in to 1.378 in (1.5 mm to 35 mm) with a plunge cut width up to 9.646 in (245 mm). The Kronos S 250 features a cross-slide system for grinding and regulating wheels with highly dynamic, digital drives and precision ballscrews that guarantee tremendous flexibility during set-up, dressing and grinding.

Another feature of the Kronos S 250 is the dressing of the grinding and regulating wheels via 4 CNC axes in the center of the workpiece plane. The machine’s design also features a thermally stable, vibration dampening Granitan® machine bed, and a broad technology spectrum that extends from infeed grinding in single or multiple production to throughfeed grinding and oscillation grinding. The full enclosure of the machine complies with the highest environmental standards so that the use of different cooling media, such as emulsion or grinding oil, is possible. The wide-opening sliding doors provide a user-friendly access to the grinding center, thus simplifying machine setups.

United Grinding also offers the Mägerle MFP 50 CD grinding and machining center as a 5-axis or 6-axis system that easily handles challenging workpieces by grinding, milling and drilling in a single clamping to dramatically improve productivity. The coolant nozzle, controllable via two axes, allows unrestricted freedom of movement and precise positioning of the coolant jet. Water-cooled direct drive motors for the grinding spindles ensure maximum performance in demanding continuous operation.

An optional balancing system dynamically balances unequal forces in the rotating grinding wheel, resulting in higher accuracy and longer wheel life. Wear-free guideway systems further increase the longevity of this machine. A thin oil film completely separates these guideways from the upper part of the column, which gives the process a high degree of thermostability. The vibration-damping effect of the oil film guarantees high-precision machining of simple and complex workpieces.
