David B. Burritt, the president and chief executive officer of United States Steel Corporation (Pittsburgh, PA), announced the promotion of Barry Melnkovic, formerly their vice president and chief human resources officer, to the position of the senior vice president and chief human resources officer. He will continue to report to Burritt.
“Barry’s experience, enthusiasm, and counsel have been invaluable to us since his arrival last year,” said Burritt. “Under his leadership, our human resources team has developed a comprehensive, sustainable strategy to help us invest in our employees, just as we do our operating facilities, ensuring our team members have the skills, capabilities, and supportive, inclusive culture necessary to deliver our strategic business objectives.”
Renewing their commitment to diversity and inclusion, Melnkovic is leading the “Pivot to the People” initiative that spearheads efforts to create a high performance culture and works to enhance the relationship between the company and the labor unions that represent a significant portion of their employee population. Prior to joining the company in May 2017, Melnkovic served as the executive vice president and chief human capital officer of labor relations, diversity and lean enterprise solutions for National Railroad Passenger Corporation / Amtrak. He was the recipient of the 2016 HR Executive of the Year Award by Human Resource Executive Magazine.
