Ron Scott, the vice president/general manager of Hobart Institute of Welding Technology (HIWT; Troy, OH), retired on October 20, 2017. He started his career at the school in 1975 as a welding instructor and was a graduate of the Institute, taking the program twice to learn to weld both left and right handed. His knowledge of welding was immeasurable and he enjoyed sharing it with others. Scott would tell students, “When your arc goes astray and you make the metal cry, just read the puddle and it will tell you why.” He was instrumental in the growth and expansion of HIWT throughout his 40-plus years with the school. Hobart Institute of Welding Technology wishes him well in his retirement.
In related news, Lois J. Bertke, the business process manager of Crown Equipment Corporation (New Bremen, OH), was named to the board of trustees of HIWT at their fall meeting on December 1, 2017. Bertke is a graduate of The Ohio State University School of Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resources. She was an active member of the HIWT Program Advisory Committee for 12 years. Her vast experience in manufacturing and the welding industry as an HR manager hiring and evaluating welder talent is a great asset. She also provides professional and strong business acumen in the industrial manufacturing market sector. “Lois is a great addition to our diverse board. Her human resource background is extremely valuable and will only add to the professionalism and support of our mission,” stated Scott A. Mazzulla, the president and chief executive officer of HIWT.
The trustees, including Mazzulla, Richard Cultice, Jennifer Monnin, Charles Ribardo, Greg S. Schaffer and Steven Tirpak, welcome Bertke to their board.
