The PUMA TW 2600/M-GL high performance, 10 in class, two-spindle turning center with an integrated gantry loader from Doosan Machine Tools America (Pine Brook, NJ) is the direct result of input from vehicle manufacturers needing a gantry loaded turning center that reduces cycle times for high volume production runs. This new machine is a complete upgrade of the previous model, with features that give it a larger working range in addition to upgrades in speed and ease-of-use. Idle time has been minimized by reducing the gantry loader handling time during both the loading and unloading cycle. The Y-axis rapid traverse rate is 34 percent faster than the previous model and faster than competitive machines. The gantry loader cycle time is 28 percent shorter, and the built-in Loader Guidance software also provides easy and convenient gantry loader operation and machine maintenance. “Every second counts when producing high volumes of small parts,” stated Jim Shiner, the director of sales and marketing at Doosan. “Every aspect of this machine was purposefully engineered to achieve the most profitable part production times possible.”
The PUMA TW 2600/M-GL comes standard with a high-power spindle that generates a maximum 19 kW (25 hp) and 404 Nm (298 ft-lb) of torque. The spindle length of 513 mm (20 in) is 6 percent shorter than the previous model to reduce vibration and noise. This translates into improved finished surfaces, longer tool life and shorter cycle times. The bearing size of 110 mm (4 in) is 10 percent bigger than the previous model to enhance spindle rigidity and improve heavy duty machining capability. The maximum standard workpiece size for this machine is 120 mm (5 in) by 200 mm (8 in) with a maximum weight of 6 kg (13 lb). The large 10-station turret has a maximum turning diameter of 360 mm (14 in) for rigidity and a bigger working area. A new servo turret mechanism reduces the chance of mechanical error and shortens mechanical response time for high speed indexing, which dramatically improves customer productivity.

Doosan also offers their DMP 500/2SP vertical machining center that is equipped with two spindles and two automatic-tool-change (ATC) systems that is ideal for production job shops and high volume parts manufacturers. Compared to single-spindle machining centers, the DMP 500/2SP effectively doubles productivity by machining two parts simultaneously, as well as greatly reducing work loading, unloading and idle times. For reduced setup times, the right spindle features a W-axis adjustment of 20 mm (0.8 in) that allows quick compensation for any variability in fixture heights between spindles. The 12,000 rpm direct drive spindles with 87 ft-lb of torque are standard, and 8,000 rpm spindles with 211 ft-lb of torque are optional. The load capacity (1,763 lb) and table size (47 in x 20.5 in) easily accommodate a variety of workpieces and fixtures, and together with the 20.5 in Y-axis stroke, offer a machining space well suited for a range of parts.
Dual 24-tool capacity magazines are standard, with optional 30-tool and 40-tool magazines. The dual ATCs boast 1.7 sec tool-to-tool times, keeping the tools in the cut longer. “Built to machine high volume parts with great efficiency, this compact system can output the work of two machining centers in a smaller footprint with considerably less capital investment,” added Shiner.
