Miller Electric Mfg. Co. (Appleton, WI) introduces their self-contained SubArc Portable Welding System, a ready-to-weld system that can be easily positioned and adapted to meet the needs of pipe fabrication. Built to provide exceptional flexibility in submerged arc welding (SAW) applications for pipe fabrication, the SubArc Portable Welding System contains the power source, column and boom on a mobile platform. The result is a compact, turnkey submerged arc welding solution that is designed for use with SubArc Digital Series power sources, a lineup that includes DC power source models ranging from 650 amps to 1250 amps and an AC/DC model offering 1,000 amps to 1,250 amps.
“Because this system is on wheels, it provides great flexibility and mobility for shops that need the ability to adapt their positioning equipment to various SAW application requirements,” said Kevin Kari, the market segment manager of the Sub Arc Solutions Group at Miller Electric. “This easy-to-adjust system saves time and helps them maximize the productivity and efficiency benefits of the SAW process.” In many shop environments, the submerged arc welding application involves restricted space or confined parameters that make equipment flexibility a necessity. With built-in fork pockets and caster wheels, the SubArc Portable Welding System provides mobility options to move the entire system to the workpiece. Easy positioning of the weld head to the point of the weld on the workpiece is possible through use of an integrated motorized column, manual telescoping boom, cross slides and 360 deg column rotation that contributes to the system’s ability to reach where the weld is needed.
The system’s flexibility accommodates workpieces of various heights and sizes. The motorized column with pendant control provides 44 in of vertical travel, and the manual telescoping boom provides 31 in of horizontal travel. The manual cross slides provide fine vertical and horizontal torch adjustment. SubArc Portable Welding System packages are turnkey systems that include the following components:
- Portable column and boom
- SubArc Digital power source
- SubArc Interface Digital and Control Cable
- SubArc Wire Drive 400 Digital Low Voltage
- 25 lb capacity flux hopper with valve
- 60 lb wire reel and spool support assembly
- OBT 600 torch for the SubArc 650 Digital system or OBT 1200 torch for both SubArc 1000 Digital systems
