Quaker Chemical Corporation (Conshohocken, PA) introduces a new portfolio of QuakerCool® metal removal emulsion technology to serve automotive/heavy equipment manufacturers and components producers that operate with diverse metallurgies. Driven by increasing performance demands in the metalworking industry, including evolving health, safety and environmental standards, Quaker has developed two new platform technologies. The major benefactors of this development will be producers of metal components with individual machining cells or smaller central systems that perform a variety of machining operations, including milling, drilling, reaming and tapping. This new portfolio of six metal removal fluids offers end users a defined selection of high performance choices to suit their specific needs for process efficiency and lower total cost of ownership.
The QuakerCool 700 Series is designed for ferrous machining and includes:
- QuakerCool 740 is a boron-free emulsifiable metalworking fluid designed for ferrous machining and grinding operations that require good lubricity, cleanliness, cooling and corrosion protection. It can be used on cast iron and will also perform well for moderate duty operations on steel alloys. It provides exceptional bio-resistance, including Mycobacteria resistance.
- QuakerCool 750 is ideal for high performance in pipe threading operations, as well as demanding ferrous machining and grinding operations. It is mineral oil free and provides good tramp oil rejection and ultra-low consumption from advanced micro-emulsion chemistry.
- QuakerCool 760 is best in class for machining titanium, with resiliency against magnesium water hardness, bio-recovery for maintenance neglect, and low consumption from advanced emulsion chemistry. This boron-free metalworking fluid can also be used on cast iron and will also perform on steel alloys.
The QuakerCool 7000 Series is designed for aluminum and multi-metal machining and includes:
- QuakerCool 7000 is a high-performance, mineral oil free microemulsion metalworking fluid that is a proven performer in exotic machining and grinding operations on titanium alloys, stainless steels, and other high nickel-chrome alloys. It is also used for critical surface finish machining of cast and wrought aluminium. It provides good tramp oil rejection, bio-recovery for maintenance neglect, and ultra-low consumption from advanced micro-emulsion chemistry.
- QuakerCool 7350 is a high-performance microemulsion that is ideally suited for all operations that demand premium surface finish quality and consistent lubrication. Ideal for machining aluminum, ferrous alloys and copper, it is best in class for overall balance of price, performance and durability. It offers strong bio-recovery for maintenance neglect, and low consumption from advanced emulsion chemistry.
- QuakerCool 7450 is best in class for aluminum tapping and reaming and delivers superior tapping performance on 356-T6 aluminum alloy. This high-performance microemulsion is ideally suited to all operations demanding premium surface finish quality and consistent lubrication. Ideal for machining aluminum and ferrous alloys. It can run at lower than normal concentrations and provides Mycobacteria resistance.
The new formulations reduce the historical use of hazardous materials such as boron, formaldehyde, and other substances of concern. The improved emulsion characteristics in several of the fluids directly influence plant metrics by reducing the chemical consumption or water use per part, while defending against traditional degrading materials like tramp oils. Benefits of both QuakerCool series include:
- Excellent biostability against bacteria and fungi.
- Flexibility for a wide range of operations including tapping and reaming.
- Handles a broad array of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, steel, ductile cast iron, compacted graphite iron (CGI), and titanium alloys.
- No to low foam and excellent emulsion stability over an expanded range of water hardness.
- High operator acceptance due to low mist and odor.
“This is a breakthrough technology portfolio for shops that goes beyond the baseline performance thresholds or conventional growing pains. The portfolio will deliver tangible reductions in tooling costs, as well as enhanced part quality and productivity over traditional fluids. Field tested, these products are running in more than 125 systems,” stated Jon Plawchan, the global product manager for Quaker Chemical.
