SGS Tool Company (Munroe Falls, OH) is the newest member to join the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM; Disputanta, VA). A leading manufacturer of round solid carbide cutting tool technology for aerospace, metalworking and automotive industries, SGS will participate in machining research activities at CCAM.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with CCAM membership as well as the local manufacturing sector in order to provide improved and innovative machining solutions for today’s evolving and challenging materials market. We believe this membership is only the beginning of mutual growth by collaboration with some of the strongest companies in our industry,” states Tom Haag, the president of SGS.

Established in 1951 in Northeast OH, they are a privately held company that manufactures high performance, high quality solid carbide cutting tools. The company has a global presence in over 60 countries, allowing them to strategically service and support their end users. In addition to high quality cutting tools, they also bring specialized tooling solutions to their customers. This aligns well with our collaborative research model here at CCAM,” states Joe Moody, the president and executive director. “We are very pleased to add them to our membership and look forward to the innovation and value they will bring to the organization.”

SGS is joining CCAM at the Organizing Industry Member level. This will allow them to engage in both collaborative and individual research projects as well as participate on the board of directors. Headquartered in Munroe Fall, OH, they also have manufacturing facilities in the UK and a network of distributors and sales representatives across the world.

The CCAM industry and government consortium now numbers 29 members, including Aerojet Rocketdyne, Airbus, Alcoa, Chromalloy, Newport News Shipbuilding, Oerlikon Metco, Rolls-Royce, Sandvik Coromant, SGS Tool Company, Siemens, Blaser Swisslube, Canon Virginia Inc., EOS, Hermle Machine Co., Mitutoyo, Paradigm Precision, RTI International Metals, Inc., Buehler, Cool Clean Technologies, GF Machining Solutions, Mechdyne, National Instruments, Spatial Integrated Systems (SIS), and the NASA Langley Research Center.

Academic partners are the Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, and Virginia Tech.

CCAM is based at a 62,000 sq ft facility that has computational and engineering research labs, high bay production space and commercial scale equipment, and specialized equipment and tooling for research in surface engineering, manufacturing systems, additive manufacturing, machining technologies, composite materials processing, and welding and joining. Leveraging the combined strengths and capabilities from them and the network of university, industry, and government partners, they bridge the gap between research and commercialization, accelerating new developments to market.
