Hypertherm Inc. (Hanover, NH), a U.S.-based manufacturer of plasma, laser, and waterjet cutting systems, is a 2015 winner of the Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious Green Power Leadership Award in recognition of its commitment to using green energy and its support of green power usage in the community at large.

The company is one of eleven organizations nationwide to receive a Leadership Award in the Green Power Purchase category. In selecting recipients, the EPA evaluates partners who have distinguished themselves through the purchase of green power, defined as zero-emissions electricity generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources.

These resources include wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact hydropower. In 2014, Hypertherm fulfilled 100 percent of its domestic energy requirements with the purchase of more than 18 million kWh of green power, or enough to power 2,000 American homes for a year. Past recipients of the award include Herman Miller, Steelcase, and the Trek Bicycle Corporation.

In accepting the award, Jenny Levy, the vice president of corporate social responsibility for Hypertherm, said the company was honored to be included among other environmentally conscious organizations. “Our decision to use green power is a reflection of our long-standing commitment to the environment and lean business principles that include improvement of our energy efficiencies,” she explained. “We strongly believe supporting clean energy sources is a sound business decision that not only fits with our broader sustainability strategies but benefits the world at large as we all work to collectively address the effects of climate change.”

“We are pleased to recognize them with a Green Power Purchasing Award for their exceptional commitment to buying green power and reducing carbon pollution associated with its electricity use,” said EPA administrator Gina McCarthy. “In doing so, they are taking action to address climate change, and we encourage other organizations to do the same.”

Hypertherm has an array of environmental sustainability goals it is plans to meet by 2020. Those goals include producing zero landfill waste, improving the energy efficiency of its global operations by 30 percent, and reducing the carbon impact of its products by 20 percent.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) co-sponsors the annual Green Power Leadership Awards in conjunction with the Center for Resource Solutions. The awards recognize the exceptional achievement among their Green Power Partners who distinguish themselves through green power procurement, market leadership, overall green power strategy, and overall impact on the green power market.
