The Hobart Institute of Welding Technology (Troy, OH) has announced the retirement of long-time librarian and editor Martha “Marty” Baker following 38 years of service. She was responsible for their website as well as work on their quarterly magazine, The World of Welding. In addition, she edited several books and served as a resource in library support for Hobart Brothers Company and the general welding industry. Baker also worked with the certified welding inspector/educator program as a supervisor for national exams.

She noted, “There were many changes that took place during the past 38 years, both here and in libraries that transformed the way we work. Without a doubt, the advent of computers coupled with social media definitely has changed the work that transpires within libraries. Throughout the years, I worked with eight different presidents and had the privilege of meeting people from nearly every state in the union and from around the world. The work was rewarding in so many ways and I owe a debt of gratitude to many people!”

As she looks forward to changing lifestyles, Baker plans continue her work as president of the Troy City Council and through volunteerism with several community organizations.

In related news, the institute also announced the retirement of long-time technical instructor Chuck Ford following 51 years of service. He was a long time welding instructor that shared his extensive welding knowledge with thousands of students over the years. He also served as a valued member of AWS (Past Chairman-Dayton Chapter), International Skills Program, ASNT (Past Chairman-Miami Valley Chapter) and ASM. Ford also worked with our certified welding inspector educator program. Chuck holds the certifications of CWI/CWE/CWS.

He noted, “I’m truly going to miss the people and students! Working here also gave me wonderful opportunities to train welders all over the world. I spent time in Japan, Hawaii, Canada and the Panama Canal.”

As he looks forward to changing lifestyles, Ford and his wife will be heading to Florida during the cold Ohio winters, and will also continue his involvement with AWS-Dayton Chapter, Symbols and Terms, ASNT-Miami Valley and ASM.
