ESAB Welding & Cutting Products (Florence, SC) is proud to sponsor the University of Toronto Baja Team in the Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) collegiate design competition conducted regionally throughout North America, beginning June 2014 in Peoria, Illinois. ESAB will support the University of Toronto Baja Team with the donation of welding equipment, consumables and personal protection accessories as they compete to design and build a rugged off-road vehicle.

Every year, more than 100 university teams participate in Baja SAE competitions across North America. In these competitions, SAE student members must function as a team to design, build, test, promote and race a vehicle to meet a range of specified dynamic elements, including acceleration, hill climb, maneuverability, suspension, traction and endurance.

The SAE competitions provide students the opportunity to complete a challenging project that involves planning and manufacturing tasks required to introduce a new product to the consumer industrial market. The winning design must be fast, robust, comfortable, safe and easy to manufacture.

“ESAB is dedicated to motivating and educating students on the potential career opportunities that welding can provide,” said Shara Cheeranjie, Marketing Manager, ESAB Canada. “We support the University of Toronto Baja SAE Team as their desire to design and build the ultimate off-road vehicle helps to draw interest in welding and welding technology.”

“ESAB’s commitment to the education of individuals and the development of their skills is very important to our team,” said Daniel Okrent, Internal Officer/Fabrication Supervisor, University of Toronto Baja Team. “We want to give students the opportunity to learn and hone practical skill sets in order to broaden their capabilities and career potential, as well as provide the chance to experience something as truly unique and worthwhile as the SAE competition.”
