SOFTWARE ENHANCES CAD BY SOLVING GEOMETRIC CONSTRAINTS
D-Cubed™ software from Siemens PLM Software (Plano, TX) is component software for CAD, CAM, CAE and PLM applications. The D-Cubed components are six software libraries that can be licensed by software developers for integration into their products.

The capabilities they provide include geometric constraint solving, parametric sketching, part and assembly design, motion simulation, collision detection, clearance measurement and hidden line visualization.

Applications into which these components are integrated include mechanical CAD, CAM, CAE, mold, sheet metal, mechanism, garment, architectural, civil, structural, plant and ship design, GIS, CMM, reverse engineering and configurators.

For example, Vero UK Ltd. (Gloucestershire, England), recently licensed D-Cubed 3D Dimensional Constraint Manager (3D DCM) software for integration into its VISI product line to provide users with a geometric constraint solving capability.

“Vero Software is a long-standing adopter of Siemens’ PLM components, including D-Cubed and Parasolid,” said Richard Smith, the chief executive officer of Vero Software. “We recognize the value in licensing proven components that are under constant development and optimization by a trusted supplier. Integrating PLM components frees up our own resources to focus on what we do best. The result is a product suite which delivers exceptional quality and functionality to help customers increase productivity and reduce costs.”

Vero Software integrated the 3D DCM into VISI Modeling as part of its recent VISI v20 release. D-Cubed component software will enable VISI Modeling users to apply mating constraints (Concentric, Parallel, Coincident, Distance, etc.) to geometric bodies and simulate the real movement of the mould or progressive die tool kinematics.

This, in turn, enables them to check for collisions and validate a design proposal – particularly important for side-action slides and complex lifter mechanisms.

“Following their acquisition of Planit Holdings last year, Vero Software has become one of the most extensive adopters of Siemens’ PLM components,” said Paul Sicking, senior vice president, the chief technology officer of Siemens PLM Software. “CAM companies support end-user CAD requirements by integrating with CAD systems from major vendors, and by developing in-house CAD capability that is tightly integrated with their core CAM functionality. Vero Software is the latest example of how D-Cubed components are used by a growing number of CAM vendors to enhance their in-house CAD capabilities.”

PLM Components include Parasolid® software, and the D-Cubed family of software products, which constitute widely used technologies providing 3D part and assembly modeling, editing and interoperability, 2D/3D parametric sketching, motion simulation, collision detection, clearance measurement and visualization functionality. www.siemens.com/plm/open
