GF Machining Solutions LLC (Lincolnshire, IL) offers the 5-axis milling capabilities of its new production-value high-performance Mikron HEM 500U High Efficiency Machine. The milling machine delivers an attractive price/performance ratio for entry into 5-axis machining, especially for general machining shops and those processing parts for the aerospace and defense industry.

As a compact machine, the HEM 500U features a 12,000 rpm ISO-B40 spindle and 30 tool magazine that provides a 2 sec chip-to-chip time for high-speed continuous milling operations and increased spindle uptime. Additionally, a 20,000 rpm spindle and 60 tool changer are available.

A trunnion table measuring 19.7 in (500 mm) diameter and accommodating workpiece weights up to 440 lb (200 kg) tilts +50 mm/-110 mm in the B-axis and rotates 360 deg in C for 3 + 2 machining as well as 5-side positioning. Axis travels in X, Y and Z measure 19.7 in (500 mm), 17.7 in (450 mm) and 15.7 in (400 mm), respectively, while a distance of 5.9 in (150 mm) between the machine spindle nose and rotary table surface allows for ample maneuverability around workpieces.

In developing the Mikron HEM series that includes the HEM 600, HEM 800, HEM 1000 and the HEM 1200 in addition to the HEM 500U, the company sought to redefine the performance and quality standards in the vertical machining center category by creating cost-effective solutions that place the company’s best technologies into modern, reliable and ergonomic designs.

According to Gisbert Ledvon, the director of business development at GF Machining Solutions, the company successfully achieved its price/performance goals with the Mikron HEM series thanks to its highly experienced and forward-thinking design and engineering teams. “The new HEM machines prove it’s possible to maintain our deeply rooted Swiss principles of quality, but at a price more customers can afford.”
