Each year, MACOG (Michiana Area Council of Governments; South Bend, IN) partners with NIPSCO (Northern Indiana Public Service Company; Merrillville, IN) to host the Partners for Clean Air Award Luncheon to award local organizations, public or private, that promote clean air practices.
In May, Bremen Castings Inc. (Bremen, IN) was one of the three recipients for the “2011 Partners for Clean Air Award” based on energy savings reported in their Recycling Promotion and Assistance Fund Recycling Market Development Grant. The grant that Bremen Castings received will help install additional melting furnaces which, in turn, will end up creating 36 new jobs. This project will increase the amount of recycling to an additional 12,000 tons of steel each year.

As a leader in the machining and foundry industry, Bremen houses its own machine shop and foundry. Keeping up with technology is high on the priority list with the Brown family, as the company continually reinvests in new equipment for production, environmental, and automation improvements. BCI uses 92 percent recycled ferrous material to produce world class gray and ductile iron castings for our world market.
During the summer, specifically April 1 through September 30, Ozone Action Days and Health Alerts can be declared. Weather conditions can combine with emissions to reach unhealthy levels. When an Ozone Action Day is declared, businesses are required to take actions to reduce ozone and ozone precursor emissions. MACOG provides information and suggestions on how to do your part on the Ozone Action Days. Some suggested activities are to ride your bike or walk to work, and encouraging employees to bring their lunches that day.
