Both manufacturers will be using their expertise in the metals industry and lean manufacturing to assist in the design and development of standard and/or proprietary solar mounting systems for large-scale utility and commercial projects on a regional and national scale.
Feralloy Corporation (Stockton, CA), one of the largest distributors of flat-rolled products in North America, has formed a joint venture with Pyramid Mouldings (Green Cove Springs, FL), a manufacturer of custom rolled formed products, that is devoted to providing complete solar solutions for the continually growing western solar market. The new joint venture is known as Feralloy Pyramid Structural Solutions (FPSS).
Feralloy is a subsidiary of Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. (Los Angeles, CA), the largest metals service center in North America with over 240 locations worldwide, distributing a full-line of over 100,000 metal products and offering customers over 160 value-added processing capabilities. Feralloy sells and processes millions of tons of flat rolled steel products and specializes in large-scale project supply-chain management.
Feralloy operates five coil processing and distribution plants throughout the U.S., plus six joint venture facilities including three processing and logistics operations of Acero Prime in México. These plants provide value-added processing to hot rolled, hot rolled pickled, cold rolled and coated sheet coils for manufacturing plants and steel producers.
Pyramid Mouldings operates four facilities in the U.S. and Mexico and has been in business for over 80 years as a manufacturer that supplies custom roll form parts and other fabricated metal components to all segments of ground transportation, appliance, architectural, office furniture, medical and solar energy markets, using ferrous and stainless steel as well as aluminum coil and extrusions. The company operates their business using the principles of lean manufacturing and also brings its extensive experience of working with customers in reducing component cost to the solar energy market.
Both manufacturers will be using their expertise in the metals industry and lean manufacturing to assist in the design and development of standard and/or proprietary solar mounting systems for large-scale utility and commercial projects on a regional and national scale. Design and development will focus on the best available and affordable steel and aluminum products to use in roll forming and fabrication. The FPSS roll forming and fabrication approach will present alternatives to existing standard designed systems to reduce costs.
The primary objective of the joint venture is to become the most logistically cost effective solution for the solar industry. FPSS will combine the engineering and roll forming expertise of Pyramid with the strength of Feralloy’s material acquisition and processing under one roof to offer owners, EPCs, and solar contractors a complete solar solution. This solution is as follows: competitive on time metallic component delivery, metal processing, roll forming and fabrication, design assistance, kitted solar solutions, and JIT delivery and logistics services.
The first phase is scheduled for early fall, with the primary manufacturing facility being strategically located within the Feralloy Western Division in Stockton, CA. This move will support the emerging solar industry in western states by optimizing logistic costs as the joint venture supplies parts and kitted solar solutions directly to customers at their facilities and job sites. The complete manufacturing and logistics support provided under FPSS will be unrivaled in the industry, and Reliance Steel & Aluminum’s family companies will now be able to provide a complete metals solution on any solar project.
