KERN Micro und Feinwerktechnik GmbH & Co. along with its U.S. subsidiary, KERN Precision, Inc. (Webster, MA) offer an ultra-precision 5-axis HSC machining center. The nearly 50-year-old German machine tool builder with a reputation for exceptional precision and outstanding quality has expanded its offerings by releasing its newest 5-axis Triton machining center. Besides its precision high-speed 5-axis capabilities, the Triton has a large 3-axis work envelope, making the machine ideal for a wide range of 3- to 5-axis parts in a variety of materials from stainless steel to titanium, in hardened or soft materials.
"The Triton provides manufactures with a very flexible platform, while providing for short-run applications or lights-out production with the KERN promise of precision part quality with outstanding machine performance and reliability," said Gary Zurek, head of U.S. marketing.
The machine is equipped with a powerful high-speed spindle with 40,000 rpm and 18 Nm of torque along with a 25-position ATC (with optional 50- or 75-position ATCs). Additionally, the Triton can be configured with an automated workpiece or robot handling system. The control unit of the Triton is the industrial standard Heidenhain control, which provides users with a remarkable graphical user interface that is both friendly and easy to use. Further, the optional Dynamic Collision Monitoring system provides user the security of 3- to 5-axis collision protection.
The 5-axis table features an integrated pneumatic chuck configured to handle virtually any part that fits in a space of 250 mm diameter and 228 mm height. The precision trunion table is German engineered with hydrodynamic torque drives for high speed 5]axis simultaneous machining. Further, there is sufficient space for a separate table chuck, a clamping device or vice in front of the 4th/5th-axis table. According to Zurek, "the hydrostatic axis engineering of the KERN Triton provides the most modern and advanced machine tool technology available for the metal cutting industry while providing significant benefits over other axis technology."
