Penn Stainless Products, Inc. (Quakertown, PA) recently installed a heavy-gauge, cut-to-length line from Herr-Voss Stamco (Callery, PA).

Founded in 1949, Penn Stainless was originally a fabrication business, trading as Schrader's Stainless. In 1979, that original 5,000 sq ft business located on Route 309 was acquired by the present ownership and focused on distribution and processing. Slow structured growth contributed to the move in 1983 to a facility in Trumbauersville, PA, and then in 1994 to the present location — a 120,000 sq ft facility in Quakertown.

Today, as a full line service center, Penn Stainless Products, practices on-going system improvements to insure that they supply their customers with the highest level of stainless steel products and in-house processing possible. This new line, which includes a Herr-Voss Stamco precision leveler, allows the service center to supply their customers with plate and sheet product of superior flatness.

Herr-Voss Stamco provided the cut-to-length line along with a turnkey installation and commissioning. The line is currently in full production. According to Jim Seward, president of Penn Stainless, "The new line significantly expands our leveling capabilities on surface-critical 2B sheet finish, as well as corrective leveling of .375 gauge. Our expansive coil inventory combined with the new line means we can reduce delivery times, even for special lengths, while giving our customers improved flatness and quality." Penn's current coil inventory includes 304, 304L, 316L, 321, 309, 310, 409, 2205 and LDX 2101 series materials in widths up to 72 in.

The line can process stainless steel coils up to 50,000 lb x 78 in wide, with a thickness range of .090 in to .375 in. John Marzula, director of engineering for Herr-Voss Stamco stated, "Working with Jim Seward and plant manager Bill Clerihan, we identified their expectations and requirements, which resulted in many key features for the line. The heavy-duty leveler with 4 in diameter work rolls provides the necessary muscle to process 3/8 in x 78 in stainless steel, along with the finesse required to level material as light as 13 gauge. Additionally, the rebook mode reduces scrap losses while improving production when processing short runs."
