SURFACE ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENT REDUCES SET-UP CYCLE TIME

An option for the MarForm MMQ 200 Formtester from Mahr Federal provides multi-parameter surface finish data according to ISO, ASME and JIS standards that reduces set-up time and testing costs by doing form and surface in single measurement.

Mahr Federal (Providence, RI) has introduced a new option package for its MarForm MMQ 200 Formtester, which provides the measurement of surface finish parameters according to accepted ISO, ASME and JIS standards. With the combined hardware/software MMQ 200 Surface Finish option, operators will benefit from reduced set-up and measurement cycle time, and reduced cost by needing only a single piece of equipment for both form and surface measurements.

"The key to providing accurate surface-finish data with a form machine is high resolution and low residual noise," said Pat Nugent, vice president, Metrology Systems, Mahr Federal. "Unlike many form measurement machines that are designed to measure longer wavelengths and allow 5 microns to 10 microns between data points, the controller for the MMQ 200 was designed with roughness measurements in mind. It can sample data with spacing down to 0.5 microns, well within accepted international standards for roughness measurement."

The roughness option package for the MMQ 200 utilizes the same skidded diamond-tipped PHT stylus that is used on Mahr Federal's PS1 and M300 surface finish machines, and the same MarWin-based surface finish software as the MarSurf® XR 20. The stylus is mounted opposite the ruby-tipped form probe on the MMQ 200's motorized T7W probe head. The MMQ 200 automatically swivels the probe to apply the diamond stylus, and changes from horizontal to vertical measurement as needed, utilizing standard surface finish parameter cut-off lengths. A skidless probe measuring option is also available.

Optimized for measuring cylindricity and other deviations of form and position, the MMQ 200 Formtester comes standard with Mahr's newest EasyForm® Version 3 Software. The MMQ 200 is compact, fast, very easy to learn and operate, and is equally at home in the metrology lab or on the shop floor. The new hardware/software package for surface roughness measurement is available as an option and also includes Mahr?s Advanced Form® Software for creating automated solutions for even the most demanding applications.

This ease of operation makes the MMQ 200 ideal for use by machine operators right in production areas where immediate measurements can minimize scrap, save time and reduce production costs. Optimized for the measure of cylindricity through rotational table axis and vertical axis integration, the MMQ 200 can also perform a full range of ISO and/or ASME form checks, including: roundness, straightness, flatness (from a polar trace), parallelism, concentricity, coaxiality, run-out, total run-out, taper, perpendicularity, angularity and angle sector (roundness, flatness, run-out). Said Nugent, "For many applications, the ability to take surface and form measurements with a single set-up can reduce costs and speed the overall measurement process without sacrificing measurement quality."
