NIMS Student Summit at IMTS 2010
Students and instructors will fully experience IMTS by exploring the opportunities open to them in industry and education and seeing the impact products have on their lives.
Posted: September 8, 2010
The Student Summit is the total experience of IMTS (International Manufacturing Technology Show, Sept. 13-18, 2010, Chicago, IL) for students and their instructors, and it's far more than touring the show. Their experience begins in the Career Development Center, a 10,000-sq-ft complex just off the entrance to the South Building. With assistance from AMT (The Association for Manufacturing Technology) (McLean VA), this area is being built out to include a registration area, two 50-seat orientation theaters, exhibition booths for 19 industry and education exhibits, an area where all student classes will be photographed, and a fully equipped NIMS' (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) office. Additionally, a 2,500-sq-ft room will be used by the schools as a staging area
In the past, some exhibitors simply left materials on tables or displays and abandoned them for the week, and the students were greeted by empty tables. That will not be the case this year; exhibits are required to be fully staffed during the center hours and exhibitors are to be engaged with the students.
Students will exit the orientation theaters to Sandvik Coromant's (Sandviken, Sweden) hub where they will see how products impact their everyday lives. As in the Game of Life (and as often in life), they will go through two archways: one through education and the other to employment.
The education archways lead them to exciting displays from FANUC Robotics (Oshino-mura, Japan), a combined exhibit of SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) (Dearborn, MI), SME Foundation (Dearborn, MI), and NCME (National Center for Manufacturing Education) (Dayton, OH), which will include an all electric re-built 1968 Plymouth Barracuda. After seeing how private industry training programs operate, they will learn about opportunities in public education by stopping at the exhibitions from TECHWORKS/Rock Valley College (Rockford, IL) and Vincennes University (Vincennes, IN). Wrapping up the education division, are exhibits from learning software company Immersive Engineering (West Bloomfield, MI) and publishing company Industrial Press (New York, NY), both of which are aimed slightly more towards educators but can still be appreciated by students.
Upon entering the Archway to Employment, they are engaged by a shared exhibit from Haas Automation (Oxnard, CA), Vincennes University, and Tri-Tech Precision Products (Anaheim, CA). From there students will go on to meet and discuss careers with Seco Tools (Fagersta, Sweden), Mastercam/CNC Software (Tolland CT), Siemens (Munich, Germany), NTMA (National Tooling & Machining Association) (Ft. Washington, MD), the Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship (Chicago), and CNCJobs.net/Trillum Staffing.
