Hougen Manufacturing (Flint, MI ) has launched its latest technology of portable magnetic drills, upgrading the long-standing ?workhorse? Model HMD914 with a newly designed, lighter weight body and an ergonomic handle for added portability.

The company is also introducing the new model HMD914S with a unique, patented, swivel base drill-to-magnet coupling that provides versatility, convenience and precise positioning to the full featured drill. The HMD914S establishes both a pivot axis for up to a 1-1/8 in arc of side-to-side motion and a straightline axis that permits up to 1-3/8 in of front-to-back movement. These additional axes allow operators to fine tune the drill position for precision hole location after the magnetic base has been engaged.

The Swivel Base HMD914S is ideal for challenging fabrication, bridge rehab projects or jobs involving horizontal or overhead/inverted drilling where supporting and energizing the magnet while locating the drill can be awkward. The Hougen unit incorporates a lockdown mechanism that, unlike similarly equipped models, makes releasing and securing the pivot and slide coupling simple, fast and virtually effortless. A single-stroke actuation handle both unlocks and securely retightens the swivel base coupling.

In addition, the new swivel base HMD914S and HMD914 standard base models have been redesigned, both having a body upgrade incorporating a new, counter-balanced handle for improved ergonomics. The HMD914 weighs in at just 41 lb, lighter than the previous model and the HMD914S at 45 lb. They are compact measuring 23 in H x 7-1/2 in W x 12-1/4 in L with drilling capacities of from 7/16-in up to 2-1/16-in diameter (ø12-52mm) and a full 3 in (76 mm) depth-of-cut. The drill has a high torque 120V, 10.5A, 350 rpm motor and robust gearing that helps better maintain cutting speeds and feeds for deep holes, large diameter holes and for working with tough, high hardness materials. Both drill models also are available with 230V motors. For versatility the drills work with many of Hougen?s Portable Machine Shop accessories such as drill chucks, tapping heads and countersinks.

Both models feature positive slug ejection, rear mounted, accessible controls and a side-to-side reversible feed handle for ease of use and a gravity-fed coolant system. They also incorporate Hougen?s exclusive safety features to insure a safe work environment?including a no-adjustment safety switch, which shuts down the drill motor if motion of the magnetic base is detected. A two-stage power on switch prevents drill rotation unless the magnet has first been engaged and safety circuitry requires the start button to be manually depressed after a power interruption.
