In recognition of women who have overcome obstacles to make a difference in the lives of others, the AK Steel Foundation (Middletown, OH) is underwriting the inaugural Steel Magnolia Awards that honor eight women who reside in the vicinity of the company's corporate headquarters and plant operations. The awards are worth $1,000 each and were presented in the form of a grant made to an eligible nonprofit selected by each recipient.

"The 2009 award recipients are courageous women who, despite personal challenges, continue to make a
significant difference in the lives of others," says James L. Wainscott, AK Steel (West Chester, OH) chairman, president and CEO. "Through the company's foundation, we are proud to honor these inspirational women by sponsoring the inaugural Steel Magnolia Awards."

The Steel Magnolia Awards are funded by the AK Steel Foundation and recognize women of all ages who have faced personal adversity and shown strength, courage, compassion and leadership through their work in support of their communities.
