SPANCO, Inc. was founded in 1979 by owner Richard Uhlig. SPANCO's original 25,000 sq ft manufacturing facility was located in Downingtown, PA. SPANCO started out manufacturing a small line of adjustable height portable gantry cranes, as well as a line of tripods. As the business continued to grow, jib cranes and bridge cranes were added to the product line. In 1992, SPANCO introduced workstation cranes into the product line under the trade name of Met Track, imported from Helm in Germany, through a company in England.

Track was imported until 2003, at which point SPANCO started manufacturing all workstation components in the United States. In 2005 SPANCO introduced rigid fall arrest track systems into the product line. In 2008 SPANCO opened a new fall protection division, selling a full line of rigid track fall protection systems under the brand name Rigid Lifelines. SPANCO also developed a line of tractor drives, for I-beam and enclosed track, and retrofit drives for jib cranes.

SPANCO has also started to design electric wire rope hoists, and currently offers a 3 and 5 ton heavy duty hoist known as the Lift Boss. In 1999 SPANCO built a new 95,000 square foot manufacturing facility on the edge of Pennsylvania's Amish country in Morgantown, PA. This facility remains SPANCO's official headquarters and main manufacturing facility. In 2008 a manufacturing facility was opened in Las Vegas, Nevada to accommodate consistent growth and serve customers on the west coast.
