PRE-SINTERED PREFORMS (PSP) FOR AERO-ENGINE REPAIR AND RESTORATION

Wesgo Metals, a business of Morgan Technical Ceramics (MTC) and a leading provider of innovative materials and coating solutions, announces its pre-sintered preforms (PSP). Ideal for high temperature applications in the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul industry, PSPs can be used for crack repair and dimensional restoration of aero-engine components such as turbine blades and vanes. PSPs are a sintered metallurgy product composed of a customized blend of brazing and superalloy powders.

Due to turbine temperatures reaching up to 1300 deg C and the presence of hot corrosive gases, aero-engine components face extensive wear. Rather than purchase expensive, new components, PSPs provide an effective, reliable solution for repairing cracks, reestablishing wear areas in components, saving considerable time and money and extending the life of engine components by up to 300 percent.

Unlike traditional brazing pastes and green tapes that require multiple re-brazing cycles and present the added problem of uncontrollable shrinkage, the porosity of Wesgo?s preforms is less than 2 percent, helping to eliminate shrinkage. Minimal post-braze grinding or machining is needed with PSP components.

For customized applications, Wesgo Metals offers PSPs in various compositions and shapes, with plate thickness ranging from 0.010 in (0.3 mm) to 0.200 in (5 mm). The preforms are cut from the sintered plate, tack welded to a component and vacuum brazed.

In addition to plates, PSPs are available in pastes and paints, which are ideal for difficult-to-reach areas. Paste provides excellent coverage and is used for filling oxidation corrosion fatigue cracks, while paints are best suited for deep, narrow micro-cracks. Both the paste and paints are used for minor build-up in wear areas. A 3D bushing, used to restore work holes and bores, is also available.

This means that customers can get the PSPs and other products they need in as little as 24 hours. Wesgo?s R&D department offer quick development work with its rapid prototype service. Stock powders can be blended, sintered and cut into performs within 2 weeks as well as quick turn-around on an array of other value-added services. Wesgo Metals also incorporates Kanban delivery processes which can minimize customer inventories by supplying the product immediately and when needed. This ?just-in-time? method greatly reduces customer costs by eliminating excess inventory.
